Sweden - Aug 2008

Hey People

We are back and had a fantastic time in Sweden. The weather was good really considering it was the end of summer up there. We had sunshine most of the time and when the clouds were there it was still OK. A cold wind was around 90% of the time which was not to great but it didn't dampen our spirits. We even went swimming in the Baltic Sea which reminded me of Dunedin temperatures !! Bit nippy to say the least. Once you were in it was fine though.

I took a heap of photos and have loaded them all onto Picasa Web so that all you have to do is paste the link into the internet and then you can view the complete album at your leisure. Here it is:

We loved Sweden and the countryside was fantastic. We started off from Munich and caught the Auto Train to Hamburg. Loaded the van onto the train and slept in a cabin. We left at 10.30pm and go to Hamburg at 8.00am so it saved a lot of driving. Unfortunately the cabin only had two bunks so Mike and I had to share one ... They told me it was for 3 - ha ha they lied !!

From Hamburg it was off to Malmö in Sweden via Denmark and the Oresund Bridge which was amazing. We spent time at the following places:

Malmö
Trelleborg - Viking Village
Karlskrona - Maritime City (Unesco protected)
Kalmar - Kalmar Castle
Vimmerby - Astrid Lindgrenn Land (Pippi Longstocking)
Eksjö - oldest wooden houses in Sweden
Gothenburg
Marstrand
Legoland Denmark

Lots of lovely wine red houses with white trims everywhere. Beautiful coastal islands, forests, beaches and fishing villages, castles and windmills - modern and old, all over the place !

Charly had a ball and loved seeing all the different things. She was really good in the car and we had planned the trip quite well with the longest stretches being from Hamburg to Malmö. After that we just had litle day trips with a maximum of 2-3 hours in the car throughout the whole day i.e. left in the morning and drove for an hour or so and then visited a site, had lunch and a coffee with an ice cream for madam and a walk around and then headed off for another hour or so.

We either slept in the van or the tent - one in each with Charly or we rented little cabins at the camping grounds which were pretty cool. Complete with kitchen, bathroom, bunks, etc. All of the camping grounds in Scandinavia have kitchens so we could cook for ourselves when we wanted to. All of them had a cool playground and some a mini-golf course which was fun for Charly.

That's all for now. Check out the photo album if you want.

Love and thoughts - Lara, Mike & Charly xxxooo
